I didn't think he did. Initially he was struggling to escape, but I think several things played into him ultimately lying motionless. I think the biggest reason is he just flat out didn't know what to do. Kimbo can be devastating on his feet, but truly is clueless on the ground. Not only did he get taken to the ground rather easily, but that chub of a man Nelson passed his guard with ZERO resistance from Kimbo.
The second factor that became more and more pressing with every second was exhaustion. Kimbo had 260lbs spread across his shoulders in a full crucifix position. Wrestling is hard enough work when you don't have a budha belly stuffed in your face. With Nelson that high on his body, he had NO leverage. He either wasn't able to, or didn't know to keep Nelson down around his hips when he first was taken to the ground. Once he passed Kimbo's guard and got his full weight across his shoulders, there was nothing he could do.
That said, Nelson didn't come close to hurting Kimbo when he had him down. He couldn't submit him by going for a kamura (something that is generally an option from the crucifix position) and his punches were absolutely anemic. I have to agree with Dana White and was thinking the EXACT same thing when he marveled at how Nelson could think he was so dominant when he had done nothing but lay a fat body on an opponent with little to no skill on the ground.
Rampage's team is getting dismantled by technique (fight 1 and fight 3) and conditioning (fight 2). Big knockout shots get you immortalized for sure (a la Rampage and his infamous slams), but technique exponentially raises the survivability of the fighter (In my green and humble opinion).
I have to admit I have gotten hooked on this series.
all that being said, he is back already. just seems a bit off if you know what i mean

I see your point and agree. It did seem pretty "engineered." It makes sense as Kimbo was the big draw and was a "surprise" addition. For him to be out so early wasn't part of the script so they just re-wrote it. . . or so it appears.
