The government will then use the information to issue identity cards. Officials will spend a year classifying India's population of around 1.2 billion people according to gender, religion, occupation and education. While China is larger, India has a more rigorous census process.

Interesting that most of the people quoted in this story seem to be accepting this. I doubt we would have the same reaction in the United States.

Yeah, not going to happen here, quietly at least.

I agree that it won't be happening here any time soon. I'm not really sure though how much of a problem I would have with it. The identity card doesn't bother me, it's more the idea that it wouldn't stop there and/or someone would at some point use the collective information for personal or political reasons.

Where do they think they will find people willing to give info regarding a person's religion, education and occupation? This is a bit much and I would be very surprised if it were to go this far in our country. But, if they have all our medical records at their fingertips it's already in thier hands.

Seriously, can India really afford to implement that??? That sounds like a very laborious task.
Though, I don't see them objecting but I certainly would NOT want that here.
