WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Senate approved a House bill to extend unemployment benefits by at least seven weeks on Thursday, sending the measure to President Bush on the same day the Labor Department reported continuing claims for jobless benefits hit a 26-year high.

It looks like some of the common folk got their bailout after all. I have to say I'm in favor of this one. KS unemployment is currently 4.8%, but 7 weeks is better than none.

I am sorry, I am against it. I know many guys who are sitting at home, not even looking for a job and now will not until after the first of the year.
Now, if they went out and actually took a job, I would not be so against the extension or at least a partial extension of benefits.

Same with me. I know lots of guys who cannot find employment. They are the lowest rung on the employment ladder.
A friend told me yesterday he has sent out 500 resumes. If you know places that are hiring let me know.
Obama will change all that.

I was in the cable office yesterday and a guy was dropping his special pricing deal because he didn't want to have to worry about the early termination fee if he ended up homeless. He didn't want to cut all his services because he needed the phone and internet to help him find a job. He said if things didn't change he would be homeless in 2 months.
He was talking to the lady behind the glass, so hard to not hear him talking. He was an average looking guy, probably late 50s early 60s. I felt sorry for him...I don't know what we would do if my husband lost his job, well other than loose everything.
I am ok with them giving longer benefits, course I think they need to have a good check system in place.

Obama will change all that. It's rough out there. My other half has been job hunting for 4 months now and it's amazing how nobody ever responds to resumes you just get a letter in the mail after a few weeks saying thanks but no thanks. I do get tired of people asking "Has he found a job yet, is he even looking"? I want to scream have you seen the job market or looked at the unemployment rates lately?
I just thank God that we can get by for now on just my salary and by being in the medical field I'm hoping it's a little more secure than other lines of work. At least with my job I'm lucky enough to say that people have to have surgery and have to have anesthesia, they really don't have many choices when it comes to that!

Yep I remind my husband all the time that as much as he hates were he works these days he can't really risk going elsewhere. I don't see this hospital closing, plus he has 20 yrs in with them can get full retirement in 8 yrs. He is not low man on the totem pole. If he goes to another hospital he has to start all over on retirement and it also extends how long he has to wait to collect the one he has now. Since they take yrs of service plus age, it is like getting double credit for the time he puts in.
One of his best friends from years ago has been looking for work forever. He got hurt on the job yrs ago and IMO either got bad advice from the attorney that handled his case or was just too macho to listen to the Drs etc. Now the lawsuit follows him, especially since he won and because it was a back injury. He can get some temp work here and there but once he applies to stay on in a reg. position they run his SS# and the no longer need his services. Then they stick him in a temp job that irritates his back and as soon as he complains they say they can no longer find him work. He has gone through all his savings, settlement money, etc etc. He is looking at needing more back surgery, so who wants to hire him. He let the ball drop on disability because it was talking so long and he found a PT job, that of course used him and let him go.
Anyway there are honest people looking to work who can't get a break for whatever reason. I think we need to help our own, here in our country. There are going to be more unemployed soon, too soon. Even with temp holiday work it will not save many. If unemployment is anything like getting SS disability or Vetran's benefits or Medicaid, then I pity anyone who is having to deal with it.

I am sure you all know I am talking about the ones not making any effort.
With that being said, I am taking things into my own hands and doing the groundwork for my own business. First, for the just in case factor, second, so I never have to depend on anyone else again.

Yes, and that's why I thought it was a good point. I wish it was just for those who really need it, but there will always be 3 (or more, who knows) who live off the social programs for every one who really needs it.

I wish that were true. I wish you the best of luck.

Thank You, I will let you all know when I am up and running! In the classifieds of course, or where ever it will have to be!
