NEW YORK — At the behest of its students, an elementary school near New York City has been renamed after President-elect Barack Obama.

The Hempstead Union Free School District board voted unanimously Thursday night to rename Ludlum Elementary School as Barack Obama Elementary School. The change went into effect immediately, school officials said Friday.

Officials for the Long Island district say they think the school is the country's first to be named after the first black president-elect, although similar efforts to rename schools, parks and streets are under way elsewhere.

Someone has to be the first one. I'm afraid this is only the beginning. Nothing like waiting a few years or after his first term. :(

Jeeze...You'd think they'd at least wait until he's been dead a bit, or at least made it to actually being President.

You know I am amazed. First KS people want to make a National Holiday for him. He has done nothing, nothing at all, other than be elected and not even complete his term as Senator. Did he even complete a term in the State Senate?

What will this school do if he is a successful as Jimmy Carter?

Let him finish a year and see how things go. I would have been at the next school board meeting and let them know I was not happy.

There are ads on TV ALL THE TIME for Obama coins, Obama plates - it's ridiculous. He hasn't even been sworn in yet. People are going to make a fortune selling things with his picture on them. It's getting old already! :p
Some of these people in the media need to get a grip on it too! Now a few of them are talking about how Obama should start earlier than the inauguration because of the financial crisis we are in. This way he can get a head start, know more and do more. It's just sick!
It got so crazy tonight with some of the pundits we couldn't stand it any longer and changed the channel.

Just think, in another 5 - 10 years you'll be seeing little Obamas and little Baracks in kindergarten. I'll bet half of them are girls.

That's not how it works with leftists. Remember Emanuel Cleavers BLVD? What about that lady who was having a mosaic of herself put on the ceiling of some courthouse in Jackson county. What's surprising is that Obama isn't naming stuff after himself yet.

I think the key word here is yet. What happens when he gets to actually sit in the oval office and makes a complete ass out of himself? Will they want the name changed back? Are you serious, parks and streets named after him? Why not limit it to a useless piece of wasteland, it would be more fitting.

those that drink the obama kool aid are not known for thinking logically. all you have to do is look at the results of the election to see that.

Now, that's hysterical! You forgot the one's named Hussein.

I heard the designer who designed the dress Michelle wore election night is renaming the company to Obama Threads. That way under her portrait in the White House she can wear it and he can get credit for that hideous creation which looks like a giant black widow spider.

Let's start renaming all the Martin Luther King stuff to Barack Obama or do we have to do all the Obama stuff in addition to King? Wonder what the rules are for this. Generall you have to die to get crapped named after you.

I always thought there were federal laws on naming government/public owned property after someone who's still alive. I know with the aircraft carriers, they have to wait til the person is dead. Coins with presidents on them are the same way.

The nuclear submarine USS Jimmy Carter exists and Carter is still alive. But somebody other than Carter decided to name it after him.

Yeah, I guess I was wrong (not often that happens) There's also the USS George Bush, hadn't realized that. :o

Though actually...Carter was the only one to have a commissioned ship named after him.

Carter was a Naval officer and Commander in Chief. I'm certain the sub was named after him long after he left office. I don't personally have any problem with that, but naming stuff after Obama before he's really done anything (minus shuck and jive his way through an election that any democrat was going to win) is awkward to say the least.

Yeah, that's what I read. It was because he was a Naval officer and President, but long after he was out of office. Carter has done a many great things (yeah, not a great President) at least he's actually earned such recognition.

Obama's only claim is to be the first true 'African American' (but not actually 'black') to be elected President. While that in itself is a great feat, I don't think he's earned naming public buildings and such after him.

You know, he thinks he's going to be the next FDR:

– President-elect Barack Obama promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create 2.5 million jobs by rebuilding roads and bridges and modernizing schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

Remember his keynote speech at the 2006 Democratic Convention? Dead giveaway.
All the pundits and dems went nuts over him then - up and coming, blah, blah, blah!

I think you mean the 2004 Democratic Convention. I remember thinking then he was going to be running for President in 4 or 8 years.

Thanks, I stand corrected. I felt the same way. Wonder if that is when he began really testing the waters, so to speak, to see what reaction he would get? Time really goes by so quickly; it's hard to think it was only 4 short years ago. It was only 2 years ago he began to actively campaign for president so do you think he knew he would probably do it in 2004?

Remember this from 2006? The feelings were running very high at this point. In fact, he got a lot of flak for this because he "wasn't taking it seriously."

In 2004 he was actually a candidate for the Senate. It's hard to believe that he had not been elected yet when he gave the speech. He was heavily favored to win though. I think at that time, most people, myself included, thought it would be 2012 or later before he would run because if the Dems lost in 2004, Hillary was going to be the candidate of choice for 2008. I figured if he did make a run in 2008, he would exit early and possibly position himself as the VP. Whoever he had backing him saw the opportunity to go ahead and make the push early since the public was/is fed up with politics as usual and wanted a fresh face and "change".

Do you recall stories coming out about how he really didn't have any opposition for either the U.S. Senate seat or was that the State Senate seat? I remember someone talking about it but can't remember now which seat it was.

I remember thinking the exact same thing. No way did I believe he would be going for President that soon.

Yes, somehow he was hand picked by someone with clout. And then there is the Chicago political machine to consider. David Axlerod who ran his campaign worked with Daley in Chicago. He is really something, I think. Very smart and Obama's whole campaign was run like a very well oiled machine. Considering how young and inexperienced Obama was to get into the race and rise to the top like he did is really pretty amazing. Guess a lot of the country felt ready for such a gamble. So far so good with what he is doing IMO. I just hope the Clintons don't try to overshadow him. Somehow, hard as I try I just cannot bring myself to trust them. She would have caught him, I think, and overtaken him if the super delegates she had in her pocket had not jumped ship. Plus the media wanted him realy badly. Hillary really came on strong at the end and ran an excellent campaign. I kind of thought she was a poor loser though.
