Science Sea Ice Ends Year at Same Level as 1979 (http://www.dailytech.com/Sea+Ice+Ends+Year+at+Same+Level+as+1979/article13834.htm)
Michael Asher (http://www.dailytech.com/ContactStaff.aspx?id=44) (Blog) (http://www.dailytech.com/blogs/%7Emasher) - January 1, 2009 11:31 AM
Rapid growth spurt leaves amount of ice at levels seen 29 years ago.

Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also drew to a close.
Ice levels had been tracking lower throughout much of 2008, but rapidly recovered in the last quarter. In fact, the rate of increase from September onward is the fastest rate of change on record, either upwards or downwards.
The data is being reported by the University of Illinois's Arctic Climate Research Center, and is derived from satellite observations of the Northern and Southern hemisphere polar regions.
Each year, millions of square kilometers of sea ice melt and refreeze. However, the mean ice anomaly -- defined as the seasonally-adjusted difference between the current value and the average from 1979-2000, varies much more slowly. That anomaly now stands at just under zero, a value identical to one recorded at the end of 1979, the year satellite record-keeping began.
Sea ice is floating and, unlike the massive ice sheets anchored to bedrock in Greenland and Antarctica, doesn't affect ocean levels. However, due to its transient nature, sea ice responds much faster to changes in temperature or precipitation and is therefore a useful barometer of changing conditions.
Earlier this year, predictions were rife that the North Pole could melt entirely in 2008. Instead, the Arctic ice saw a substantial recovery. Bill Chapman, a researcher with the UIUC's Arctic Center, tells DailyTech this was due in part to colder temperatures in the region. Chapman says wind patterns have also been weaker this year. Strong winds can slow ice formation as well as forcing ice into warmer waters where it will melt.
Why were predictions so wrong? Researchers had expected the newer sea ice, which is thinner, to be less resilient and melt easier. Instead, the thinner ice had less snow cover to insulate it from the bitterly cold air, and therefore grew much faster than expected, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (http://www.dailytech.com/Article.aspx?newsid=13834#).
In May, concerns over disappearing sea ice led the U.S. to officially list (http://www.latimes.com/news/science/environment/la-me-polar15-2008may15,0,1220040.story) the polar bear a threatened species, over objections from experts who claimed the animal's numbers were increasing.

What, how can this be?:D

Sea Ice At 1979 Levels (http://constitutionallyright.com/2009/01/05/sea-ice-at-1979-levels/)

Charles Signorile (http://constitutionallyright.com/author/Charles%20S/) January 5th, 2009 Features (http://constitutionallyright.com/category/features/), Global Warming (http://constitutionallyright.com/category/global-warming/)
Less than four months ago I wrote about “specialists” who declared that man made global warming was contributing to the retreat of arctic ice (http://constitutionallyright.com/2008/09/08/specialists-agree-meltic-arctic-ice-due-to-man-made-global-warming/). Here is a paragraph from the New York Times article:
Global warming from the continuing buildup of human-generated greenhouse gases is almost certainly contributing to the ice retreats, many Arctic specialists now agree, although they hold a variety of views on how much of the recent big ice retreats is due to human activity.
Basically, the so called Arctic specialists agreed that man was to blame for the retreating ice, with the only discrepency being as to how much we should be blamed. A recent report by the University of Illinois’s Arctic Climate Research Center (http://www.dailytech.com/Article.aspx?newsid=13834) suggests however, that the only people we should be blaming are the “specialists” themselves, who continue to rely on false data:...;)

Who woulda thunk it? A made up catastrophic phenomenon that is slowly being proved to be false....

I remember seeing an episode of Penn and Teller's "Bullshit" on global warming. It was very eye-opening, particularly because Penn and Teller have nothing to gain by exposing the myth while those in the Al Gore camp have everything to lose. Proliferating the myth is the name of their game.

Speaking of "Bullshit", there's also one on recycling that's very eye-opening. I'm not going to hijack the thread with it, but all the episodes are on YouTube if anyone's interested.

What's cool is that P&T not only have nothing to gain, they have a lot to lose.

Is there a youtube of them ever doing anything funny?

Penn and Teller's BS show was great. I do not get the pay channels now, so I do not know if they are still on. Great Show!

A blanket of snow has covered a mountain in a part of the UAE, a rare phenomenon for the desert Gulf country, according to local media reports.

Al Jees mountain, 5,700 feet (1,737 metres) above sea level and 25 kilometres (15 miles) northeast of Ras Al Khaimah city, was covered in 20 centimetres (eight inches) of snow, the state news agency WAM said.

"Although limited snowfall was recorded on the mountain some years back, for the first time the peak of the mountain was fully covered in snow," it said.
Local authorities said temperatures plunged to minus 3 degrees Celsius (26.6 Fahrenheit) on Friday and again to below zero on Saturday, The National newspaper reported.

Major Said al-Yamahi of Ras al-Khaimah police told the newspaper that an area of five square kilometres (almost two square miles) was covered in snow.

The emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai also had heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, in a spell of rare chilly weather in a desert state where summer temperatures can reach 50 Celcius (122 Fahrenheit).

I can not find it again, but someone reported they do not even have a word for snow in UAE. I have an idea for them, call it algore!

You're on a roll today!

Anyone heard from those "specialists" lately? I'm all for going green, but I'm sick and tired of hearing about how necessary it is in order to halt global warming.

Screed, supposedly the "man-made" part of global warming is false, but is there ANY global warming going on? Is there any need to be concerned about going green beyond simply being responsible?

This might not be funny, but still good. Catch them at the RIO.

I am all about something different than oil to keep our money here in the states and being good to our environment too. The only "expert" talking is that idiot liar Hansen from NASA. No one is listening to him.

I actually was in CA last week listening to a scientist on the radio and I was absolutely enthralled. He was saying that from the looks of things we could be on the way to another mini ice age. He said that man made global warming was false and just looking at core samples and patterns should be enough for all to understand. I did hear Rush give a poll that says people are now in the majority that do not believe in man made global warming. They believe in climate change but not man caused.

Our new President is now reducing the time that automakers have to increase MPGs and reduce emissions. Economy is bad, automakers are tankiong and this idiot is hanging another anchor around their necks.

Well needless to say that's not the kick of a .357, but interesting nonetheless.
