GOP Congressman Intros 'Rangel Rule,' Eliminating IRS Late Fees

The Texas Republican introduced a bill Wednesday to eliminate all IRS penalties and interest for paying taxes past due.

Americans may be able to rest a little easier this April if Congressman John Carter, R-Texas gets his way.
Rep. Carter introduced a bill Wednesday to eliminate all IRS penalties and interest for paying taxes past due.
The legislation calls for the creation of what he calls the, "Rangel Rule," -- drawing attention to the recent legal issues of House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., enabling citizens who fail to pay taxes on time to do so later with no additional fees.
Rangel, who writes the country's tax policies, acknowledged last fall that he failed to pay thousands in real estate taxes for rental income he earned from a property in the Dominican Republic.
As of September 2008 the Harlem Democrat reportedly paid back more than $10,000 in taxes but that did not include any IRS penalties.
"Your citizens back home should have the same rights and benefits that come to you as a member of congress. You shouldn't be treated any differently under the law than your citizens back home," Carter said.
He added that citizens should receive the "same courtesy" that the IRS is allegedly granting Rangel and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who also recently acknowledged a failure to pay taxes.
Carter penned a letter to Rangel earlier this month requesting that he either pay the IRS fees or join him in co-sponsoring the legislation establishing the rule.
"As Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, I believe you set an example for all American taxpayers in your dealings with the IRS, and that you must do so in a way that enforces blind justice without regard to wealth or status," he wrote in the January 6th missive.
A spokesman for the New York Democrat would not comment on the state of the tax issue, which is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, but did respond to the Carter bill.
"This legislation is unnecessary. All taxpayers currently receive equal treatment under the law," Rangel spokesman Emile Milne said.
Carter, a former judge, said he is trying to focus in a what he believes is a double standard and add some levity to the debate.
"I am raising this issue not so much to just push the issue but to open the discussion. I don't think it's wrong for us to start having a free discussion in congress and with a certain amount of humor in it about how should people be treated in congress," he said.

Well, I am glad it is being brought up again, even though you will never hear it on the national news!

Maybe one has to work for the government in high places to get this kind of favor.
Since Charlie loves cars, he has a few and apparently not enough garage space at home to keep them. For years he has kept his valuable old Porsche, covered and parked in the garage at Capitol Hill which is against the rules.
He also just went on a little junket with some others from the Black Caucaus which lobbyists put on which is also a no-no - against Ethics Laws.
Pretty soom we are going to have somewhat of a riot between the Reps. Dems. and how there is no equal justice when it comes to what the Dems. get away with.
I'm sick of it and the press turning a blind eye. Just like today Obama raising holy H about executive's bonuses, etc. being so high and when they leave getting huge payouts and sitting right beside him was the tax cheat of the month Gainter (sp) who walked away with nearly half a billion dollars to come to work for the good people of the USA as Treas. Sec. Oh, and Timmy's executive assistant hand picked was a lobbyist for Goldman Sachs. Obama made an exception in this case, bending the rules. HOW DO THESE PEOPLE KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE AND SLEEP AT NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! Do they laugh behind the backs of the American People. Yeah! I think so!

I agree, they probably laugh behind our backs, it seems though that they are laughing at us in front of us with Obama and crew.

You and I realize that, trouble is many do not.
Emanuel is one I have felt that way about all along even when he was helping to corrupt the Clintons. Not that they needed any help or anything. HA!

Are you flipping kidding me! If they confirm him I may join the Church of Scientology!

WASHINGTON – Former Sen. Tom Daschle, picked by President Barack Obama to lead his health reform efforts, recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in unpaid taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press.
The White House acknowledged Friday that "some tax issues" had emerged in connection with the nomination, but a spokesman said the president is confident the former Senate Democratic leader will be confirmed as the new health secretary.
Daschle filed amended tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to reflect additional income for consulting work, the use of a car service and reductions in charitable contribution deductions. He filed the returns after the announcement that Obama intended to nominate him to head the Health and Human Services Department.

Reductions of charitable donations; how freaking tacky! That really, really disgusts me; how low can one go. Shoot, we don't even claim all we give with receipts from Good Will, etc.
Nice perk - the car and driver. What - he's not capable of driving himself or is he so self obsorbed and conceited, with notions of entitlement that he has no decency.
Sure doesn't seem to make a difference that he lives/lived off the good folks of this country big time regarding how he conducts his personal life.
No way do I want him rearranging the health care system in this country because he doesn't even have the "Patriotic Duty", as Biden declares to pay his own way and live like the rest of us. He will get what he needs, that's for sure.
Interesting how they come out with this information late on a Friday afternoon.
Everyone should contact their congressmen and ask them not to confirm him. I am going to do it tonight.
When is his confirmation hearing; anyone know?

I am sure he will be confirmed, but it could be ugly if everyone calls. If Rush and Hannity bring it up he could go down in flames. The people will not go along with two tax cheats on his staff.

In a way, they were stupid to announce it late Friday because it gives Rush, Hannity and others time to get their ammo ready.
Wonder if the Sunday talk shows will bring it up?
