I'm always recruiting new members for my charity BBQ team (Smoking For Cancer) if any of you are interested in getting into competitive barbecue. Sounds interesting, care to elaborate?

I just really like to BBQ and have a few buddies who are really into it too... I started the team in 2007 and we entered the American Royal that year finishing near the bottom of the rankings. We competed again this year and did a little better... our recipes are much better, but our technique still needs work. We've decided to enter a bunch of contests this year instead of just the royal and will probably start in April with the competition in Sugar Creek.
We try to get together at least once a month to "practice" (bbq and drink beer).
The charity part involves raffles at each event. We've raffled off everything from concert tickets and autographed CDs to dinners at local restaurants and services from local businesses. 100% of the money raised gets donated to The American Cancer Society. (In 2007 at Smoking For Cancer 1, we also donated a bunch of hair to Locks Of Love including 19.5 inches of my hair)
practice involves everyone chipping in to make it happen... sometimes that's one guy bringing the meat and another getting wood-chips while a 3rd buys the beer, sometimes everyone just throws in money and we pick up all the supplies at the closest grocery store... there's no real formal protocol at this point, we're all friends who like bbq and beer-drinkin', so it just sorta works out.
if you want to get in on it, all we ask is that you're a team player who is down to offer and receive constructive criticism on bbq technique.

I'd like to get in on it. Missed out last year when you did it, but I think I'm in a better position now. I'm hoping to build a trailer smoker by summer, and I'll be perfecting my rub til then (though I think it's pretty good already :D)
chronic, this sounds like quite a deal you guys are doing. my hats off to you guys.

Power to you and your group for the good actions.
But...why is it important to mention you are an Atheist? Does it matter to you that others know or is it important to throw that in the Christian's face?

Before this gets out of hand please remember this thread is about smoking meat for a charity not religion or lack thereof. If you wish to continue a discussion not related to "Smoking for Cancer" please locate the appropriate social group. Thanks

Tried to edit my post and can not seem to find the edit key.
I am not judging you, just curious. I meant what I said about Kudos to you and your team for the good deeds! I do not want to hijack this thread, so Mods, feel free to edit or delete my post in question.
Kudos to Chronic for using a venue everybody loves, which is eating great BBQ, to help find a cure for cancer. I am available for test tasting anytime and I will give an honest opinion ;)

It's important to throw it in the face of christians. ;)
I don't feel like the thread is being hijacked at all... i think threads should naturally devolve... eventually all threads end with someone calling someone else a nazi and then it's time for a new thread.
I'm just trying to demonstrate that atheists are morally superior to christians... AND we make better bbq! :p
in all seriousness, I mentioned the atheist thing as a passing joke. I know this place is full of bible-beaters and I thought that maybe the comment would get a laugh. I guess christians frown upon laughing. :p (another joke, lighten up)
